The painting depicts a group of people with a central figure rather hidden among the crowd to whom the majority of hands seem to belong. What at first glance appear to be hands that embrace then one realizes that perhaps instead they are hands that separate, grasp, perhaps carry away. The interloper pretends to be one of the group but has crept in to separate, to bring disharmony, to wreak havoc, to spoil the party. The disturbance may be social, individual, psychological, physical, it may have been caused by a natural cause or by someone but in any case it has changed the mood and brought about an end of the party.
“Hollow”, originally represented a figure which embraced a belly in the shape of a “cosmic egg“. Yet, the belly exploded during the firing process, leaving a void, implying transformation and loss.
